Objectives

The general objective of e-SYMBIOSIS project is to produce a web based platform for Industrial Symbiosis communities, offering automation, supporting Small and Medium business enterprises (SME’s) into IS market–oriented activities, considering regional priorities and enabling the public administrators (municipalities, regional offices) to implement their environmental policy and to monitor environmental and economic consequences. Specific objectives linked to Life+ objectives, are:

  • Consolidate practices and valuable knowledge base established by the numerous NISP projects in a form that could run autonomously;
  • Build features to support innovative policy approaches to facilitate the IS implementation as an environmental policy at a local, regional and national level;
  • Build a knowledge-based approach with a potential to report measurable social, environmental and economic benefits;
  • Prepare and train industries to embark on IS and to use the service. Train industries to make full use of the service potential. Use the service to demonstrate capabilities widely, supporting the uptake of IS as an innovative approach;
  • Deploy the widest possible application of scientifically verified technologies (decision support technology, ontology engineering, knowledge extraction) to upgrade IS towards a systematic and powerful methodology, attractive not only to the practicing communities but also to research and development groups with capabilities to advance its innovative features;
  • Provide means to disseminate IS widely first in the prefecture of Viotia and eventually across Europe offering the web service for demonstration, training and promoting of the IS concept;
  • Improve and increase the participation of SME’s, through the automated service, into the numerous market-oriented activities built on IS (first in relation to the targeted region of Viotia but also in other regions in Greece and Europe);
  • Reduce the natural resource consumption (raw materials, energy, utilities) reducing waste streams to landfill, a major problem in the region, in Greece and across Europe;
  • Establish Industrial Symbiosis networks and recruit champions to disseminate IS in Greece, the Balkans and all regions deprived of dedicated government support for Industrial Symbiosis.
