About the project

Image Industrial Symbiosis engages traditionally separate industries in a collective approach to resource efficiency, involving the physical exchange of materials, energy, water, and/or by-products. ‘The keys to Industrial Symbiosis are collaboration and the synergistic possibilities offered by geographic proximity’ (Chertow, 2000).

It is the diversity and the openness of Industrial Symbiosis that makes it a unique approach to eco-industrial development.
Industrial Symbiosis systems collectively optimize material and energy use at efficiencies beyond those achievable by any individual process alone. The eSymbiosis project seeks to promote and enable open interaction between participants in Viotia, Greece in order to develop an effective network that delivers commercial, environmental and social benefits within a defined geographical region.

The IS offers measurable outputs with respect to environmental, economic and social benefits open and available for the public to review.

In particular, IS helps companies to trade waste as feedstock, building communities that are environmentally integrated and efficient. IS as a market-oriented practice contributes to the creation of new businesses and jobs and saving costs in raw materials and discharge fees. IS reduces waste across the wide range of industrial activity that includes chemicals, metals, plastic, biomass, electronics, but also municipal waste.

The project builds the IS approach in one of the most industrialized region in Greece with a scope to promote the example in the rest of the country, other Balkan states and the rest of Europe.
